U.S. Army veteran allegedly faked his death days before he was expected to plead guilty to raping, impregnating his 14-year-old stepdaughter

The New York Daily News - 2/12/2019

Feb. 12--A U.S. Army veteran accused of raping and impregnating his 14-year-old stepdaughter allegedly faked his own death off the Alabama coast just days before he was set to plead guilty on the charges in Mississippi, officials said.

Police found an abandoned dingy belonging to Jacob Blair Scott, 42, back in July. Inside was a note that contained his social security number and the words "I'm sorry," the Orange Beach Police Department said. A handgun was also tied to a rope.

However, officials said last week the circumstances were suspicious because there was no forensic evidence of suicide and his body never turned up. They also noted that Scott withdrew $45,000 from his retirement account and disappeared just days before he was set to admit his guilt.

Scott allegedly sexually assaulted the young girl, who was not identified by authorities, when her mother was sleeping.

The girl's mom, who was also not named, only found out about the abuse when the girl's older sister took her to a local hospital to report the crimes, according to the Sun Herald. It was there she learned that her daughter was 10 weeks pregnant and Scott was the father.

DNA evidence later confirmed the news.

The mom told the Herald she wasn't at all surprised to hear her ex-husband may have faked his own death.

"He wasn't the type of person to own up when he did something wrong," the mother told the outlet. "He said he'd never go to prison."

She also said Scott physically abused her multiple times -- abuse her daughter saw and was terrified of.

"She knew he was violent and she knew he would follow up on his threats," her mother told the outlet. "He would say, 'I'm going to blow your momma's head off and make you watch if you tell what's happened.'"

The mother is said to have only reported one instance of abuse and no action was taken against Scott.

The two were married for 10 years before she divorced him upon learning of his abuse to her daughter, the Herald reported. The daughter was two years old when he came into her life, but it was not immediately clear how long the abuse had been going on.

The mother had one final plea for Scott: Please, just do the right thing for once and turn yourself in," she said. "(My daughter) deserves justice, Jacob. You've done enough. Please, please turn yourself in and do the right thing."
